Street Drugs that Have Helth Benifites

The use of illegal drugs for medicinal reasons is a controversial topic, even as more states and jurisdictions allow the use of medical marijuana and other substances every year.
And self-medicating — using drugs without the assistance of a doctor or other medical professional — can be dangerous. "Potential risks of self-medication practices include incorrect self-diagnosis, delays in seeking medical advice … incorrect dosage, incorrect choice of therapy, masking of a severe disease, and risk of dependence and abuse," wrote the authors of a 2010 article published in the journal Current Drug Safety.
Because of these risks, doctors strongly advise against the unregulated use of illicit drugs, which can do more harm than good. Nonetheless, medical researchers continue to find a surprising number of health benefits in drugs widely used for recreational purposes. [Image Gallery: 7 Potent Medicinal Plants]

Magic Mushrooms: Mushrooms containing psilocybin produce colorful hallucinations, even when consumed in small quantities. There's also some evidence that small amounts of psilocybin can relieve the symptoms of cluster headaches, obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression.
Research published in the British Journal of Psychiatry in 2012 found that volunteers taking psilocybin had enhanced recall, making the substance an effective adjunct to psychotherapy. Another 2012 study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that the drug slowed activity in the centers of the brain that are hyperactive in people with depression.

"We're not saying go out there and eat magic mushrooms," Robin Carhart Harris, lead author of both studies, told Reuters. "But ... this drug has such a fundamental impact on the brain that it's got to be meaningful. It's got to be telling us something about how the brain works. So we should be studying it and optimizing it if there's a therapeutic benefit."
Ecstasy: Also known as MDMA, ecstasy is a synthetic compound that produces hallucinations, feelings of emotional warmth and high levels of energy. The same psychoactive properties that make ecstasy so popular with partygoers may also make it useful in treating post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.

Other research has found that ecstasy has robust anticancer properties, particularly for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. In 2011, researchers from the University of Birmingham found that a slightly modified form of ecstasy was 100 times more potent at destroying cancer cells than the original form of MDMA. "Further work is required, but this research is a significant step forward in developing a potential new cancer drug," the researchers said in a statement.

Cocaine: Leaves of the coca plant (Erythroxylum coca) have been used as a stimulant in South America for thousands of years. The drug derived from coca, cocaine — popularly known as coke, blow or Bolivian marching powder — has been credited with a range of health benefits.
Cocaine can be used as a topical anesthetic for surgical procedures due to its rapid-acting numbing properties. When combined with other compounds into a preparation called TAC, cocaine can also treat minor skin lacerations, since the drug is an effective vasoconstrictor (narrows blood vessels).
Dr. Andrew Weil, founder and director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, has studied coca's gastrointestinal effects among South American communities. "If you look carefully at the coca leaf's molecular array, you find 14 bioactive alkaloids … while cocaine acts as a gut stimulant, other coca alkaloids can have precisely the opposite action. They inhibit gut activity," Weil wrote in the Huffington Post.

"During my time in Andean Indian communities, I collected many reports about whole coca's paradoxical, normalizing effect on bowel function, and experienced it firsthand, as well," he wrote.

LSD: Lysergic acid diethylamide, usually known as LSD or acid, is a hallucinogen that's been widely used for decades, but recent research finds it has some potential for treating alcoholism. A study from Norway, published in 2012 in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, suggests that LSD prevented alcoholics from relapsing during treatment.
"LSD worked in an entirely different way than any current psychiatric drugs," said study author Teri Krebs of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. "Many patients said they had gained a new appreciation for their alcohol problem and new motivation to address it." [Slideshow: Scientists Analyze Drawings by an Acid-Tripping Artist]

Ketamine: Also called "Special K," this animal tranquilizer is sometimes used as a recreational drug by attendees at dance raves and other events. The drug may also effectively combat the symptoms of depression.
A 2012 study from the journal Science found that ketamine may help stimulate the growth of synapses in the brain, and beneficial effects of the drug on people with chronic depression can occur within hours. "The rapid therapeutic response of ketamine in treatment-resistant patients is the biggest breakthrough in depression research in a half century," Ronald Duman, professor of psychiatry and neurobiology at Yale University, said in a statement.

Marijuana: Pot, in addition to being the most widely used illicit drug in the United States, has a raft of medical benefits. According to NORML (a marijuana advocacy group), 21 states and the District of Columbia allow some use of medical marijuana.
The drug has been shown through years of scientific research to relieve chronic pain, prevent PTSD, stimulate appetite for people with AIDS wasting syndrome, control nausea, relieve intra-ocular pressure associated with glaucoma, treat opioid dependence and improve the symptoms of Crohn's disease.

Why is my blog not showing on google search?

Getting listed is one thing. Getting a good rank is another altogether. The vast majority of people don’t click past the first page of search results, says Pura, so it’s not enough for your site to simply be indexed by Google. You want it to rank on the first page (which typically has 10 website listings). To do this, you need to employ search engine optimization (SEO) strategies

Below are some  are some great tips on how make your blog listed on Google and other search engines.
Not everyone who creates a blog hosted by TypePad, Blogger or WordPress.com
is guaranteed that his/her blog will be listed.
I remember for this very blog I am using I had the same problem. It made me give up blogging, something love doing.
I search the entire web on how to make your blog listed and I got several answers which i tried out but still it did not show.
Here I will show you some simple ways on how to over come this problem fast.

Open a Google web master tool account and submit your new blog there. Google web master provides you with detailed reports about your pages' visibility and helps you find the problems that hinder it from being shown on the on Google search engine.

Reasons Why Google Hates Your Blog

You don’t know which keywords your readers are using

The very heart of search engine optimization is understanding what people are searching for online and aligning your own content to those searches. When you use the same words and phrases that your audience members use, your blog posts can be matched to online searches. If you don’t? Well, you may as well be blogging in another language.

You don’t know how to find the right keywords

Google has a free keyword tool that will show you different phrases being searched on, the amount of traffic they get, and how many other sites are also trying to rank for those phrases. Spend a few moments before writing each blog post to find the most popular phrases for your blog topic, or use keyword analysis to think of new topics!

You don’t use your keywords frequently enough

Using your keywords as frequently as is natural will help Google understand what your blog post is about. Use an online tool such as wordle.net to produce a word cloud from your blog post. Your most frequently used words will be the largest ones you see and you can quickly see if you’re using the right phrases often enough. But beware of over-using your keywords and being labelled a spammer.

You are trying to rank for too many keywords in every post

Keeping it simple is definitely the best approach when you are optimizing your blog posts. Focus on a single theme and choose one main keyword to avoid diluting your SEO efforts.

Your blog headlines don’t even mention your main keyword

Strategic marketing aims your message like a laser rather than spraying it into the wind, and the same applies to SEO. Your headlines (h1 text) and subheadings (h2 text) are given more weight than regular text, so they’re prime candidates for your keywords and phrases.

You don’t bother putting descriptions on your images

You might include images to catch your readers’ eyes, or to help balance your text, but Google can’t see your images and unless you attach a description of some sort, your image will be ignored. Attach an image description using the ALT tag or caption, and don’t forget to use those keywords.

You never link to your old blog posts

Creating links between your blog posts makes it easy for your readers to discover other content, which naturally keeps them hanging around for longer. From an SEO point of view, Google pays particular attention to links, making them the ideal location for your keywords.

You never link to other bloggers

Although it sounds contrary, you will also get some SEO benefit from sending your readers away from your blog by linking to other blogs. You might do this with a “best-of” list post or with a blogroll—however you do it, but Google sees you sharing high-quality content with your audience, and rewards you for it.

You don’t fill out your page title and description fields

Meta data is the code name for the information you can use to advertise your blog post to Google. When you search on Google, the results are displayed as a post headline in bold and a brief description underneath. Search engines can work this information out but you are better off writing these yourself and popping those keywords in.

You don’t make your URLs search engine friendly

Using recognizable words, especially your keywords, in your blog post URL will help Google to make sense of your blog posts. The bonus, of course, is that your blog posts will be easier to remember for everyone else. So take a minute to edit your blog URL before you publish.

Your blog has broken links all over the place

Broken links occur when a URL points to a page that no longer exists. It might be that you changed the URL slightly or you deleted the blog post, but broken links give the impression that you aren’t maintaining your blog. Broken links also stop Google from crawling your blog posts and when you put the two together you get a big SEO cross against your name.

Your blog doesn’t have a sitemap

A sitemap is a website page that has all the links and pages of your blog mapped out. Sitemaps make it easy for Google to index every page on your blog, which can affect how quickly you appear in search engine results. Most content management systems will have a plugin that will create and submit your sitemap to Google, taking all the hard work out of the process.

You copy your content from other bloggers

Smart people don’t try to reinvent the wheel. They draw inspiration from the world around them. Google rewards original content but “original” refers to the wording rather than the concept. If you lift large amounts of content from external sources, and Google will mark it down as duplicate content and give you no SEO points. Adapt or attribute. Always.

You don’t publish blog posts often enough

Google loves fresh content and new posts on your blog are a great incentive for Google to come back and visit. Some bloggers publish when they are inspired. Some bloggers write every day. The question you need to answer is how often can you publish valuable and relevant posts to your readers.

You never use bullet lists in your blog posts

Google loves bullet lists. Not quite as much as headlines, subheadings and links, but a lot more than regular text. That, of course, means you should use lists to break up long passages of text and pop your keywords in, especially in the first couple of words of each list item.

You don’t have a presence on any social media platforms

Google is always looking for ways to return search results that are valuable and relevant. Social recommendations are becoming a huge influence on how search engines view your content and that’s exactly what active social media pages are. So go and get social, and build a community around your blog.

You don’t share your blog posts on your social media pages

Social media pages are fantastic for building a community—see above. They are also the perfect vehicles to share and promote your blog posts! Don’t be afraid to share your new blog posts across social media and ask your community to share the love. You are building social currency that Google loves to see.

You don’t invite blog readers to leave comments

Comments give your blog the kind of freshness that search engines just love. Comments also show that your blog posts are still relevant to readers. Invite readers to leave their thoughts and continue the conversation or blog about something a bit controversial to get the discussion started!

You don’t know where your biggest referrers live

Google Analytics will show you where you have the greatest numbers of people sending traffic to your blog. It’s worth knowing who they are so you can give them the attention they deserve. Your analytics will also show you the keywords that led people to your blog, how many times they visited, and which other pages they clicked on.

Your blog content will age like a b-grade actress: badly

Blogging about topical subjects is a great way to start a conversation but it might also date your blog posts into irrelevancy. Creating helpful, educational content, instead of editorial content, is just one way you can create a library of blog posts that will be relevant again at a later date. Mixing different types of blog posts will also keep your readers interested.

You don’t write about topics people are interested in

If you ever ask yourself if your blog posts are interesting enough, you’re asking the wrong person. If your blog isn’t getting much attention from readers then Google isn’t going to give it a second look. You can discover a wealth of potential topics from comments on other people’s blog, surveys, keyword analysis, trending Twitter topics, and simply asking your current readers. Don’t be shy!

You have advertising that is irrelevant to your blog topic

Paid advertising is more than ok but if you have a lot of advertising that is irrelevant to your blog topic then it kind of makes you look bad. Google is getting really good at picking out poor poor-quality websites and lots of irrelevant advertising can give off all the wrong signals.

You don’t have share buttons so people can’t spread the word

Social share buttons let your readers promote your words of wisdom without ever having to leave your blog. Apart from the extended reach, the more often your blog posts are tweeted, liked and commented on, the more value they have … and the more Google will notice you.

Your guest posts are replicated on other sites, word for word

Opening your blog up to guest bloggers is a fantastic way to add depth and variety to your own blog topics—not to mention giving yourself a break from writing! But if your guest bloggers publish the same content, word for word, on their own blog, then you don’t get the kudos from Google for original information. Ask your guest bloggers to give you exclusivity or at least a few weeks’ head start.

You write about too many topics and Google is just plain confused

If you have a lot of different passions, that’s wonderful, but blogging about them all on the same blog will get you nowhere. In fact, from an SEO point of view, your blog will look like a big pile of books on the floor: too hard to categorize. Keep it simple and Google won’t get so baffled.

What Works and Google Likes to see on Your Blog

Add keywords to your website content.
Keywords can be a single word or a short phrase of up to four or five words. These should be terms that are relevant to your site and which people are likely to use when they search Google. Obviously they need to be relevant to what your site is about. “You want to choose three to five keywords that you really want to focus on,” says Pura.

Use meta-tags to add more keywords.
Meta-tags are hidden code — visitors to your website don’t see them, but the Google search engine “bots” that scan your site will pick them up. You can add these meta-tags to your site yourself if you have a web design program or if you know how to do HTML coding. If not, you can hire or assign a web designer to add them for you. Pura says you should add no fewer than 10 meta-tags and have no more than 20.

Find keywords that aren’t overly competitive.
Pura suggests you use Google’s free Keyword Tool to figure this out. This web tool lets you gauge the popularity of particular search terms, as well as the level of competition you face by using them. Highly competitive keywords can have tens of thousands of websites fighting over them, so you are less likely to wind up on page one of Google if you pick these.

Seek out backlinks, web pages that contain links back to your site
“The biggest factor for search engines today is backlinking,” says Pura. “It’s what they are looking for. If you have multiple websites linking back to the page, Google thinks this is one of the best pages.”
You can get backlinks through blog posts in which you link to your own site, reciprocal links (having others link to your page in exchange for you linking to theirs), press releases you issue with your web address listed, Facebook pages listing your site, and articles you write and post on other websites with links back to your site. Be creative.

Create a listing for your site in Google Places.
This tip is for retail businesses with physical locations. It lets Google link your site to a map listing, so when people look for your business or search using keywords linked to your business, they will find a Google map listing — and can click through to your website for more information.

Have content that is relevant to your site.
Use articles or other material that is specific to the services you are providing. Don’t use filler that is only tangentially related. Google’s latest algorithm ranks sites with original, relevant content more highly than those with content repeated elsewhere.

Consider buying a sponsored Google listing.
Google Adwords is a program that lets you get your site listed on the right-hand side of the Google search results page. However, this piece of Google real estate comes with a price tag, which varies anywhere from 5 cents to $5 (and up) each time someone clicks on your sponsored listing, says Pura. The fees are negotiated with Google and depend on how many other people want to use the keyword you have chosen.

Choosing a  good Topic for Your Website or Blog

(I like to talk about experiences, or talk shit on my blogs. Just blog about what ever comes to mind)

For example; I had a bad cop give me shit, so I wrote about it. If you Google, "Pinellas park Cops Suck". You will see my blog come up first.

I also did one on, TalkFusion. Bob Reina CEO Talk Fusion

Choosing a Topic
Choosing a topic for your website or blog can be tough. I like to tell everybody to write about their favorite hobby, sport or just what ever you find interest in doing. It often seems so simple. Just come up with a cool idea, build a site, get millions of hits, get listed on onto Yahoo or Google and you'll be rich!
Not exactly. To make good money using this method, it takes time. Figure a couple of months to get listed onto Google, Yahoo, Bing and other search engines.
While this idea has worked for a handful of people, the average story doesn't go quite like that. How ever I have all my friends and family receiving google checks.  Learn more on my Key Words page.
Get Your Websites & Blogs URL Listed on GoogleYahoo, and Bing.

What Topic is Best?
If your goal is to make money then I cannot stress how important it is for you to select something that holds your interest. This system does require maintaince. Remember, this is going to be a site you will need to update frequently to keep your visitors interested and maintain your traffic levels.
So it's important you select something you know a lot about or at least have some interest in learning more.

This is where it starts to get fun! Different topics monetize differently and  pay differently.  How much money you  make is based on the key words that are listed.  Researching can be fun, you can come across topics you never thought were so popular, write them down for future projects. Research is based around Keywords. Keywords are the most important part of creating a website.
Learn more on my Key Words page.

Define Your Purpose
The first thing you must do is think about the purpose of the essay you must write. Is your purpose to persuade people to believe as you do, to explain to people how to complete a particular task, to educate people about some person, place, thing or idea, or something else entirely? Whatever topic you choose must fit that purpose.

Evaluate Each Potential Topic
If you can think of at least a few topics that would be appropriate, you must simply consider each one individually. Think about how you feel about that topic. If you must educate, be sure it is a subject about which you are particularly well-informed. If you must persuade, be sure it is a subject about which you are at least moderately passionate. Of course, the most important factor in choosing a topic is the number of ideas you have about that topic.

Tips on Placing Your Ads

There are many things you should know about Ad-sense. The key to success is to put the ads into the nicely *click-able* spots and deliver as much targeted traffic to these pages as possible.

Display your ad units where repeat users will notice them.

Because forum regulars tend to skip the header and go straight to the meat of the thread, placing your ad unit above or below the first post can be more effective than ads next to the logo.

Place a leaderboard immediately after the last post. This provides users who make it to the end of a thread with a 'next step' when the content ends. Try to avoid placing it after the footer, though, as your readers will likely move to the next thread without seeing the ad.

Using multiple ad units, you can use a variety of formats to fill ad space throughout your site. Placing a skyscraper above the fold on the left side of your forum seems to produce slightly better performance than other positioning. However, when using multiple ad units throughout the page our horizontal bias still favors the leaderboard.

Use horizontal link units, which are small enough to fit near the top of your forum just below the header. For the regular forum visitor, link units offer a wider range of relevant topics to browse.

When placing ads on your website you will first need access to the HTML or back-end of the site to edit the layout. If your using a blog layout or some other open source application then you need to find a place where your allowed to edit the script or code. Once you in this area you will then want to copy and paste your affiliate ad scripts and linking codes.

Don't just place your ads anywhere, make them look like content. If the ads look like information and not ads then people visiting your website will be more likely to click on the ads or visit the affiliate link which will then earn you a commission.

There are other types of adverts beside the context-sensitve ads. "Ad-Sense for Search" provides you with a Google search box that you can place on your site. When your visitors search through that box, and click an advertisement, it will be as though they had clicked an ad on your site. "Referrals" provide you with ads for specific products.

A good Tip you should know, is that if you place these ads in a good spot. People will naturally click on them. When people surf the web, they are usually looking for something. The trick on placing ads is to strategically put them in a spot where it will catch someone attention.

Another Tip is Web Traffic. You want as many people as possible to view your website or blog. When people do a Google search. You want your website to pop up. The more , the better. You want as much web traffic as possible.

  What Key Words to Use

It is vary important to have key words in your website. Why $$$ ?  In order to make money with Ad-sense, it’s important to have these keywords listed. Google looks for these key words to place ads on your website. The ads on your website are based on the content you write about.

Make sure your site contains many of the content around the selected keyword. Not in the description a hundred times, but make sure you evenly ’spread your meaning in the content. It should be read well, and should therefore be informative for your visitors.
1. Most Importantly - Include keywords in your copy. Of course, you'll need to use your keywords within your copy. Excellent places for keywords include: the very top of the page (above your logo), the headline, sub headlines, the first paragraph, and the last paragraph.

Keep in mind that search engine spiders are stupid. They are looking for the exact keywords, not something that's close. If you really want to be listed under the key phrase of "dog groomer and border", then that specific and exact phrase must appear repeatedly throughout the copy on all pages of your site. Be sure it is included in the first paragraph, in the first sentence if at all possible.

2. Put keywords in your META tags. Whether you're using FrontPage, Dreamweaver, Go Live or any other site design program, there is a tab (usually at the bottom of the screen) that takes you to the HTML code. After you've gotten your design finished, save your page and click the HTML tab.

The site title is what shows up in the blue bar of the browser screen. Something like "dog groomer and border offers loving care" will do. Notice it doesn't include the name of the grooming company. It includes a very short description of the business, including keywords.

Now, we'll do something similar for the keyword and description tags.

For the keywords description we'll type in: "dog groomer and border dog grooming, pet grooming, pet bathing, dog bathing".

For the site description, we'll type in a short, attention-getting sentence. This is what your visitors will see when they search for your company and the listings appear on the screen. It can normally be 25 words or less. This also must include your keywords and phrases. Something along the lines of "Dog groomer and border. Our dog groomers take exceptional care of the special pet in your life." Notice it gives an advantage for using your service (you take care of the pet), as well as using three of your keywords.

HINT: You can include a different site title, description and keywords for each individual page if you choose to.

3. Put keywords in your ALT tags. If we added a photo of a dog wagging his tail, we could include an ALT tag that says, "Dog grooming for the special pet in your life" or another phrase that includes our keywords. Because ALT tags consist of words, the search engines can read them just like they read your META tags. When they read the keywords within the tag, it increases your keyword usage and your chances of getting higher positioning.

4. Include keywords in your domain name and page names. Perhaps you've found that "Car Insurance" is your most effective keyword. You might try to get a domain name such as Cheap-Car-Ins.com or Auto-Ins.com. Including keywords in your domain name gets you extra brownie points! Likewise, include keywords in all your page names.

Adsense Error "please correct the errors on this form"

Here is an Easy Fix for this error.
"please correct the errors on this form"
Many of the bloggers now facing the problem with their adsense widgets. Whenever try to add the new  adsense link unit using the blogger widgets, it shows the error "please correct the errors on this form" as shown bellow.

In blogger you can add the adsense units in two ways. First one is adding the adsense using the blogger widgets(Most of the beginners doing this) and the second method is to obtain the adsense code from the adsense login page and place it into the targeted position on the blog.

To improve the revenue from adsense you have to place the appropriate ad unit into the right position. The adsense link units are very important for increasing the adsense revenue. So due to this error many of the bloggers are unable to place the link units.

Here is the solution for the problem.

1. Login into your adsense and blogger account.
2. Now make sure that only two adsense widgets (units) are present on your blog, this is because Google allows only three adsense units per page.
3. Now go to your adsense home page.
4. Click the "My ads" tab on the top left corner of the page.

5. Click the "New ad unit" button.

6. Now create any appropriate ad unit (You can choose the link units) as you wish, save it and copy the java script.
7. Now go to your blogger dashboard and click the "layout".
8. Click the add a gadget option from the blog layout.
9. Now choose the HTML/ JavaScript gadget.

10. Now paste the copied java script into the new gadget content (Name for the gadget is optional) and save it.

ATA Versus Sata

The performance of computer systems has been steadily increasing as faster processors, memory, and video cards are continuously being developed.  The one key component that is often neglected when looking at improving the performance of a computer system is the hard drive. Hard drive manufacturers have been constantly evolving the basic hard drive used in modern computer systems for the last 25 years, and the last few years have seen some exciting developments from faster spindle speeds, larger caches, better reliability, and increased data transmission speeds.
The drive type used most in consumer grade computers is the hardy ATA type drive (commonly called an IDE drive). The ATA standard dates back to 1986 and is based on a 16-bit parallel interface which has undergone many evolutions since its introduction to increase the speed and size of the drives that it can support. The latest standard is ATA-7 (first introduced in 2001 by the T13 Technical Committee (the group responsible for the ATA standard)) which supports data transfer rates up to 133MB/sec.  This is expected to be the last update for the parallel ATA standard.

As long ago as 2000 it was seen that the parallel ATA standard was maxing out its limitations as to what it could handle. With data rates hitting the 133MB/sec mark on a parallel cable, you are inviting all sorts of problems because of signal timing, EMI (electromagnetic interference) and other data integrity issues; thus industry leaders got together and came up with a new standard known as Serial ATA (SATA). SATA has only been around a few years, but is destined to become “the standard” due to several benefits to be addressed in this Tech Tip.
The two technologies that we will be looking at are:
ATA (Advanced Technology Attachment)– a 16-bit parallel interface used for controlling computer drives.  Introduced in 1986, it has undergone many evolutions in the last 18+ years, with the latest version being called ATA-7.  Wherever an item is referred to as being an ATA device, it is commonly a Parallel ATA device. ATA devices are also commonly called IDE, EIDE, Ultra-ATA, Ultra-DMA, ATAPI, PATA, etc. (each of these acronyms actually do refer to very specific items, but are commonly interchanged)SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment)– a 1-bit serial evolution of the Parallel ATA physical storage interface.
Basic Features & Connections

SATA drives are easy to distinguish from their ATA cousins by the different data and power connections found on the back of the drives.  A side-by-side comparison of the two interfaces can be seen in this PDF from Maxtor, and the following covers many of the differences…Standard ATA drives, such as this 200GB Western Digital model, have somewhat bulky, two inch wide ribbon cable with 40-pin data connections and receive the 5V necessary to power them from the familiar 4-pin connection.  The basic data cables for these drives have looked the same for years. A change was made with the introduction of the ATA-5 standard to better improve the signal quality by making an 80 wire cable used on the 40-pin connector (these are commonly called 40-pin/80-wire cables).  To improve airflow within the computer system some manufacturers resorted to literally folding over the ribbon cable and taping it into that position. Another recent physical change also came with the advent of rounded cables. The performance of the rounded cables is equal to that of the flat ribbon, but many prefer the improved system air flow afforded, ease of wire management, and cooler appearance that come with them.

SATA drives, such as this 120GB Western Digital model, have a half inch wide, 7 “blade and beam” data connection, which results in a much thinner and easier to manage data cable.  These cables take the convenience of the ATA rounded cables to the next level by being even narrower, more flexible and capable of being longer without fear of data loss.  SATA cables have a maximum length of 1 meter (39.37 inches), which is much greater than the recommended 18 inch cable for ATA drives.  The reduced footprint of SATA data connections frees up space on motherboards, potentially allowing for more convenient layouts and room for more onboard features!

A 15-pin power connection delivers the 250mV of necessary power to SATA drives.  15-pins for a SATA device sounds like it would require a much larger power cable than a 4-pin ATA device, but in reality the two power connectors are just about the same height.  For the time being, many SATA drives are also coming with a legacy 4-pin power connector for convenience.

Many modern motherboards, such as this Chaintech motherboard, come with SATA drive connections onboard (many also including the ATA connectors as well for legacy drive compatibility), and new power supplies, such as this Ultra X-Connect,  generally feature a few of the necessary 15-pin power connections, making it easy to use these drives on new systems. Older systems can easily be upgraded to support SATA drives by use of adapters, such as this PCI slot SATA controller and this 4-pin to 15-pin SATA power adapter.

Optical drives are also becoming more readily available with SATA connections.  Drives such as the Plextor PX-712SA take advantage of the new interface, although the performance will not be any greater than a comparable optical drive with an ATA connection.
Performance

In addition to being more convenient to install and drawing less power, SATA drives have performance benefits that really set them apart from ATA drives.

The most interesting performance feature of SATA is the maximum bandwidth possible.  As we have noted, the evolution of ATA drives has seen the data transfer rate reach its maximum at 133 MB/second, where the current SATA standard provides data transfers of up to 150 MB/second.  The overall performance increase of SATA over ATA can currently be expected to be up to 5% (according to Seagate), but improvements in SATA technology will surely improve on that.

The future of SATA holds great things for those wanting even more speed, as drives with 300 MB/second transfer rates (SATA II) will be readily available in 2005, and by 2008 speeds of up to 600 MB/second can be expected.  Those speeds are incredible, and are hard to imagine at this point.

Another performance benefit found on SATA drives is their built-in hot-swap capabilities.  SATA drives can be brought on and offline without shutting down the computer system, providing a serious benefit to those who can’t afford downtime, or who want to move drives in and out of operation quickly. The higher number of wires in the power connection is partially explained by this, as six of the fifteen wires are dedicated to allowing the hot-swap feature.
Price

Comparing ATA drives to SATA drives can be tricky given all of the variables, but in general it is the case that SATA drives will still cost just a bit more than a comparable ATA drive.  The gap is closing rapidly though, and as SATA drives gain in popularity and availability a distinct shift in prices can be expected.  Considering the benefits of SATA over ATA, the potential difference of a few dollars can easily be justified when considering an upgrade.
Final Words
The current SATA standard provides significant benefits over ATA in terms of convenience, power consumption and, most importantly, performance.  The main thing ATA has going for it right now is history, as it has been the standard for so long that it will not likely disappear any time soon. The future of SATA will be even more interesting as speed increases will help hard drive development keep pace with other key system components.
