Provigil: Narcolepsy Drug Being Taken By People Without The Sleep Disorder

People are abusing this drug called Provigil, that is a wake-promoting drug used to treat certain sleep disorders like narcolepsy, is also being used by some without the sleep disorder to keep them alert and attentive, according to an ABC News report.
"People have used it to try to get an edge at studying at school. It's becoming like Ritalin where people are taking it that don't have anything. But they're using it to try to increase their alertness," Dr. Philip Gehrman, Ph.D., CBSM, clinical director of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Program at the University of Pennsylvania, told HuffPost.
However, doctors told ABC News that it is not known if the drug is safe for use long-term, as there has not been any research on this specifically.
"It's very tempting, but I think long-term it's a bad idea," Dr. Martha Farah, a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Pennsylvania, told ABC News. "We actually know very little about the long-term effects."
There are also side effects associated with the drug, according to the National Institutes of Health, which include headaches, nausea, back pain, burning or tingling skin, and more severely, rashes, hives, problems with breathing or swallowing, anxiety, depression and hallucinations. (For more on the side effects of Provigil, click here.)
In addition, people need to realize that the drug is not a replacement for sleep, and if they take it and don't get enough sleep, they will still experience the negative health effects of sleep deprivation, Gehrman explained.
"They're just kind of masking how they feel during the day, and so all the negative health consequences of not getting sleep still apply," he added.
In fact, it says on the Provigil website: "PROVIGIL does not take the place of getting enough sleep. Follow your doctor's advice about good sleep habits and using other treatments."
Provigil was first approved by the FDA as a treatment for narcolepsy. It was hailed because it was an alternative to stimulants, which were the only other treatment for narcolepsy at the time, but had a lot of side effects, were easy to build up tolerance to, and could be abused, Gehrman said.
Provigil's use was later expanded to treat people with shift work sleep disorder and certain cases of sleep apnea, where the sleep apnea is already being treated but sleep problems still persist, he said. The military has also done some work with the drug to see if it could help troops stay awake for extended periods of sleep deprivation.
Use of Provigil among people without sleep disorders isn't new, though. TechCrunch reported back in 2008 about an executive who was able to work 20 hours a day while on the drug, even though it hasn't been shown to be safe for use for this purpose.
Athletes have gotten in hot water, too, over taking the drug. Kelli White, a U.S. sprinter, tested positive for modafinil on a drug test, and subsequently had her World Track and Field Championships medals stripped from her in 2004, BBC News reported.

The Most Googled

If you're asking yourself, what is the most Googled word?, The answer is Porn. The word 'Porn"is  the most googled word. There are many websites have actually been googled much more, like youtube, facebook and even google, but there is a word which has been even more googled than those words too, and that is "free." because, everybody likes free things. That is why many people do a google search for the word "Free".
However, if you put the two words together, "Free Porn". The you have a winner.  The words Free Pron is googled 1,000's times each day.
But, Facebook has been googled much more.  The more people that like your Facebook page, the better it does both on Google and Facebook. The Facebook search is becoming used more often, as people know they can usually find a group, page or profile where they can send a message to someone, or post a question, and are likely to get a response.

Baby Robot Learns Its First Words

Baby Robot Learns Its First Words

At team of scientists lead by the Caroline Lyon at the University of Hertfordshire, UK have developed a “baby robot” that learns human speech in much the same way a human child learns. The robot converses with a human teacher and soon a string of incoherent babble from the robot beings forming actual words, in the same way a baby’s noises come together to form speech.
The project may lead to robots and AI that form words and sentences on their own, actually learning a language in the same way humans do. This would lead to more natural responses in AI and less errors when using programs like Siri.

It can also be very helpful in understanding how humans learn language in a more profound way. It is known that between the ages of 6 and 14 months, children begin to go from babbling strings of nonsensical syllables to actually forming words. Once they have a few base words, these then provide contextual clues for learning other words, eventually giving children a full vocabulary of words to choose from and form complete sentences.
The team at Hertfordshire was motivated by their understanding of this process to program a humanoid robot called iCub with all of the syllables in the English language. This allows the robot (who they call DeeChee) to babble (rather creepily) like a baby. Researchers then treated DeeChee like a child, speaking and attempting to teach the robot about rudimentary ideas like color and shape.
DeeChee was programmed in listen to the teacher and then respond with its own syllables. Each time it heard a syllable repeated by the teacher it would give that syllable a higher score in its 40,000 syllable lexicon. It would then use these syllables more often, and even begin forming words to match what the teacher said.
When the teacher showed approval for recognizable words, these syllables where given even more value in the computers programming. As the process continued, more and more recognizable words would begin to show up amid the babble. The scientists believe this closely replicates the early stages of speech development. Babies often become sensitive to repeat words and attempt to replicate them in their own speech.
“That words can emerge from babble using a statistical learning process not specific to language demonstrates that this stage of language acquisition does not require hard-wired grammar faculties”, said Lyon in the research publication PLoS One. In other words, this method is the absolute first step humans take in the process of learning speech. Grammar and the cognitive association of words follow in humans, but not with DeeChee, who will never use those syllables to form complete sentences or understand their meaning.
But it is the first step in what could eventually lead to advanced AI that develops its own language from the ground up. As Lyons puts it: “If you want the robot to work with natural speech, then you might need to teach it from the very beginning.”

Reid offers new plan on student loan deadlock

-- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is suggesting a new way to break a standoff in Congress and prevent student loan costs from doubling next month for 7.4 million students.
In a letter to Republican leaders Thursday, Reid is proposing to pay for an extension of student loan rates by charging employers higher pension insurance premiums. The proposal would raise about $8 billion. Another Reid proposal could raise almost $10 billion by easing pension funding rules for businesses that would result in companies taking fewer tax deductions for pension contributions.
Reid's letter highlights the pressure facing lawmakers to strike a deal on student loan rates before they expire July 1. GOP leaders have suggested instead raising money by making it harder for states to collect some federal Medicaid reimbursements.
